On January 2, 2022 I attended the first of 124 major league games that are anticipated for 2022. Thanks to my nephew Ryan, I had probably the best seats I will have at any of the events this year. He has a friend he knows from the dog park who has 8 season tickets, so he gave Ryan 2 of them so that he could take me. Our seats were on the 30 yard line in the lower bowl; you could actually see the player's faces. And all of the seats were extremely comfortable; kind of like what I imagine the first class seating is like on an airplane. But the most impressive part to me was the distance between the rows. There was enough distance for someone to get up and go to the aisle without everyone in between having to stand up.
The game was rather lackluster, as the Chargers dominated the Broncos, and the game was never in doubt. The final score was 34-13. However, for the second day in a row I saw a kickoff returned for a touchdown. Given how few kickoffs get returned, especially in college since you can signal a fair catch even in the field of play, it is pretty unusual to see kickoff returns on back to back days. Also, I got to see Justin Herbert break Phillip Rivers' Chargers record for most touchdowns in a season. I actually was surprised he held the record, instead of Dan Fouts, who was the quarterback during the Air Coryell years (yes I am that old that I remember that), but I think they may have only played 14 games in those years.
As for the food, as bad as the Rose Bowl was, this was the polar opposite. We ended up getting food at the first place we saw near our seats, so I do not know about the variety available, but I assume there were a lot of options. We went to the Barbecue place, and had a choice between a large brisket sandwich, a large pulled pork sandwich and 1/2 a smoked chicken. All three entrees came with potato salad and Cole slaw and pickles, and they were the same price ($17) as the three miniature chicken tenders and fries I had at the Rose Bowl. All in all, a very good dining experience.
